Never meet your heroes

They say, “Never meet your heroes.”

But this time was different.

Recently, at the Japan Society of Aesthetic Surgery (JSAS), I had the opportunity to attend a lecture by Dr. Talei, a surgeon who is highly respected worldwide in the field of facelift surgery.

For a long time, I had been watching Dr. Talei’s surgical videos on QMP (Quality Medical Publishing), learning from his understanding of anatomy, his surgical techniques, and the way he approaches the face in facelift surgery. I had also been reading one of his papers for many years, and having the opportunity to receive his signature on that very paper was a deeply meaningful experience for me.

Dr. Talei’s lecture was truly remarkable. It was filled with valuable insights into anatomy, surgical technique, and the way we should understand and perceive the face.

Dr. Talei’s surgical markings from his QMP videos and lectures are truely meticulous. They were not simply lines drawn for the operation; each marking reflects a deep understanding of true anatomy and the dynamic expressions of the face.

His explanations were rooted not only in surgical technique, but also in how the face moves, ages, and expresses emotion. This made me realize once again that facelift surgery is not just about lifting tissue, but about truly understanding the face in three dimensions and respecting each patient’s individuality.

But the moments I had to know him as a person taught me even more.

Through speaking with him directly after the lecture, I could feel that his passion and work ethic are rooted deeply in his core values as a human being. His words did not seem to come merely from knowledge or experience, but from his sincerity toward patients and his deep sense of responsibility as an aesthetic surgeon.

That meant a great deal to me.

Passion and effort cannot be sustained for long by a superficial obsession with technique alone.
At their foundation, I believe, lie one’s personal beliefs, values, and way of life.

From Dr. Talei, I felt this very strongly.

One of the concepts that left the strongest impression on me was distinguishing “surgical anatomy” from “true anatomy.”

As surgeons, we operate based on the structures we can see during surgery. However, what is visible is not everything. The face is composed of complex three-dimensional layers: skin, ligaments, fascia, fat, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels.

But true understanding goes beyond simply recognizing these structures as tissues. It means understanding each patient’s facial expression, age-related changes, skeletal structure, skin texture, and individuality.

Learning to really see the face.
And more importantly, to truly see the patient.

I was reminded once again that this is an essential attitude in facelift surgery.

On this occasion, I also had the privilege of sharing a meal with Dr. Taro Makino and Dr. Shoichi Sasaki.

Both are leading doctors in the field of facelift surgery in Japan. Being able to spend time with such surgeons and learn about their approach to surgery and their attitude toward patients was an incredibly valuable and meaningful experience for me.

What top surgeons have in common is not only outstanding technical skill.

A constant commitment to learning.
An uncompromising attention to detail.
And an unwavering attitude of never compromising when it comes to patients.

A facelift is not simply a procedure that lifts the skin. It is a surgery that requires a deep understanding of facial structure, while preserving the natural beauty that each person inherently possesses and refining the changes that come with aging.

That is why facelift surgery requires not only technical skill, but also a deep understanding of anatomy, an aesthetic eye, and a sincere attitude toward each individual patient.

Through this experience, I was once again able to reflect on what I should truly value as an aesthetic surgeon.

At MSA, in facelifts and in all other treatments, I hope to continue pursuing natural and beautiful results while valuing each patient’s individuality, rather than simply changing their appearance.

To truly see the face.
To truly see the patient.

I will carry the lessons I learned from this experience into my daily practice and surgeries.

Thank you, Dr. Talei.
A true hero in our field of facelift surgery.

I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Taro Makino and Dr. Shoichi Sasaki for the valuable time I was able to share with them.
